The Absolutes of
Leadership
Jossey-Bass (Simon and Schuster) 1996 |
How does one become a leader? Many people never know that they can lead
because they do not have the necessary information of what is involved.
This book was designed to be read in an hour or two.
Chapter Content:
Introduction: What Is Leadership?
Leadership is not a system; a definition of leadership; the absolutes of
leadership; and the development of leaders are all discussed in this
chapter.
The Leadership Personality
Here we are looking at the five styles of leadership and the
personality grid. This lets the readers classify themselves in order to
determine what they need to do to improve. It also lets us evaluate those
with whom we work or play.
Absolute 1: A Clear Agenda
Personal agenda; organizational agenda; stating the agenda so it can
be understood and communicated; creating the plan.
Absolute 2: A Personal Philosophy
Creating a philosophy; Learning; Innovating; Deciding. The personal
philosophy involves: quality; finance; and relationships.
Absolute 3: Enduring Relationships
Relationships cannot be left to chance; a case history of a bank
merger is included here to explain the point.
Absolute 4: Worldly
A case history that shows how worldly people think. They know how to
deal with other cultures and attitudes.
The Leader and Finance
Financial leadership; money is a tool not a product; money as
nourishment; preventing financial problems; making measurements understood
and used by all.
The Leader and Quality
Beginning with quality is the way to turn an organization around; the
organization mirrors the integrity of the leadership; systems integrity is
the way to think about prevention.
The Leader and Suppliers
Dealing with suppliers; selection of suppliers; communication;
performance; educating others.
The Leader and Employees
Relationships; Selection; Education; Climate.
The Leader and Bosses
Relationships; Agreement; Help; Prevention.
