Quality Without Tears
The Art Of Hassle-Free Management
McGraw Hill (1984) |
QWT was written after Philip Crosby Associates and its Quality College
were five years old. I wanted to update the application of my concepts and
make them clearer by using more personal examples. I talked about my
weight loss process in comparison to installing quality improvement, for
instance. It was also an opportunity to show what was being taught in the
Quality College so others could use it to their advantage. This was
particularly true concerning the Absolutes of Quality Management and the
Quality Improvement Process steps. I went into detail concerning their
philosophy and application. In the definition concept a golf game is
detailed showing the real score versus what the player thought he was
shooting.
In order to make clear the concept of prevention I compared it in the
second chapter to vaccination. The ingredients for the serum are listed as
applying to every layer of management. This thought is particularly useful
in discussing quality management with management people while conducting
education classes for them. It helps them understand that their role is
very direct in causing quality to become part of the woodwork.
I wanted to show what executives do in their work life so those who had
not lived at that level could relate to it. This took two chapters. Number
three, Demotivation, is about hassle the management inflicts on the
employees for no good reason. It has many stories to describe what
happens. One of them concerns the planning system at "Lightblue,"
a fictitious but realistic organization. This lets the reader see how
hassle evolves even with the best of intentions. The other chapter (four)
is about the Quality Carol, an unapologetic take off on Dicken's tale of
Victorian Christmas. In this one the Scrooge character is going to have to
spend eternity repairing all the nonconforming products he let get
produced and reprocessing all the software and services he let be sold. We
even made a film of this story using Hollywood actors. In some parts of
the world where Dickens was not a household name people thought I had
created the idea for and written a terrific story. However we set them
straight. Extra chapters were included to show how Scrooge and Lightblue
all came out in the end.
To help people relate to the value of the concepts and processes, I
included a group of success stories; a chapter on mixing the vaccination
system; chapters on Determination, Education, and Implementation; and a
discussion of why very little improves all by itself.
Quality Without Tears has become a classic handbook for those
charged with causing quality to improve.
